About the Programme

This qualification was designed by NZ Institute of Management and the Aviation, Travel and Tourism Training Organisation to assist students and those already working in the tourism industry to become qualified to work in more senior positions. The programme allows students to complete compulsory papers alongside optional papers as well as completing a tourism research project within a tourism business.

The course is divided into three sections, with each being completed in one semester. In the first semester students complete three compulsory papers and in the second three papers are selected for study. The student chooses these from a selected list. In the final semester student whjo have successfully completed the previous work will complete the final compulsory paper and the research project. Students will be placed in a tourism business and the project will meet this business’ needs..

This programme is approved and accredited by NZQA.

Entry Requirements

•A minimum age of 18 years plus 4 years secondary schooling (NCEA-Level 2) or be a mature student aged 20
•Proof of residency, citizenship or visa status
•IELTS band score of 6 or equivalent (International Students only)

Understanding how environmental factors impact on marketing decision-making, analysing the concepts of market segmentation, targeting and positioning, recommending marketing mix variables to allow market strategies, the marketing planning process and buyer behaviour factors.

580 Principles of Tourism

Students will understand concepts of global tourism and apply this knowledge to the tourism industry in NZ (demand / supply factors / marketing / investment issues / future growth).

685 Tourism Industry Management

Students will apply business concepts to develop a business plan for a small or medium-sized tourism venture

689 Research Project or Practicum

A detailed observation and analysis of a tourism / travel workplace or a specific function in a tourism / travel work place under appropriate supervision for 200 hours. This can relate to the resolution of an issue or to the introduction of an innovation into the workplace

400 Accounting Principles

This paper covers the business environment, accounting policies, financial statements and their components, analysing and reporting on business performance and the use of management accounting tools.

510 Introduction to Commercial Law

An introduction to the NZ legal system, contract law, consumer law based on everyday situations, understand negligence, property law Including intellectual property, privacy law, alternative dispute resolution, legal entities, ethics and employment law.

520 The Economic Environment

An introduction to the ‘free market’ system of supply and demand, different market structures, the role of government, understand models and methods to illustrate the macro-economic environment, the impact on NZ of changes in the global economy and the potential effects of ‘free trade’.

550 Business Computing

Evaluating the parts of a business information system, evaluating communication technologies, computer ethics and safety and using software applications (Microsoft Office) to produce information to meet business requirements.

530 Organisation and Management

Understanding management philosophies and current management practices, the influence of the internal and external environment on organisational behaviour, the importance of ethics and social responsibility, the decision-making process and delegation, the functions and roles of managers, organisational structures and team dynamics.

560 Business Communication

Business communication theories and practices, understand self-concept, perception and cultural influences on the communication process, understand interpersonal communication skills, do an oral presentation and various types of business writing, and understand communication flows in an organisation and meeting management.

633 Human Resource Management

The impact of the environment on HR management, job design and job analysis, recruitment, selection and induction, a training and development plan, performance management and the evaluation of remuneration and rewards, legislative requirements for health and safety in the workplace and the collection and storage of HR data.
